Do you like exploring new places? Here are the villages in Lazio that you absolutely must visit once in your life. They are 25 places awarded for their beauty and included in the list of “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.” This is a private association that promotes Italian places (that decide to join) with “outstanding historical and artistic interest.” Here are the villages in Lazio to discover:
Amatrice
Known for its amatriciana, it is located on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo. It is surrounded by nature; in fact, it is an ideal place for biking or long walks. The unspoiled environment of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park makes for a unique visit.
Atina
Called the city of Saturn, founded (according to legend) by the god of Olympus, it has one of the largest city walls in the Italic world.
The village is all to discover: the historic center, the Hill and the hamlet of Ponte Melfa.
Boville Ernica
A village to get to know the beauty of Ciociaria and its flavors. We recommend a visit in spring, when the flowers make the village even more charming.
Calcata Vecchia
Calcata is an ancient medieval village that stands on a tuffaceous cliff. Characterized by picturesque alleys, the village was abandoned for a time due to the crumbling of part of the rock. Today, however, it is being repopulated especially by artists and musicians, who give the village a bohemian air.
Castel di Tora
Castel di Tora, a crib on the water, is located in the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve. Here you can see the Cascate delle Vallocchie waterfalls for free and discover Lake Turano.
Castel Gandolfo
Castel Gandolfo, overlooking Lake Albano, is known for being the place chosen by the Pope for his summer residence. In fact, a train leaves from the Vatican that takes you right to discover this place.
Castel San Pietro Romano
In the Colonna fortress every year is hosted the artistic nativity scene with life-size characters. In addition, historical re-enactments are held in August with music, good food and fireworks.
Castelnuovo di Porto
A former Roman colony in the Middle Ages, today it is a village to be discovered with its imposing Castello della Rocca, the grand Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta and the Palazzetto Cardinalizio.
Castro dei Volsci
In the village of Nino Manfredi, born in 1921 within the town’s stone walls, you can see the Fortress of San Pietro, the Monument to Mamma Ciociara, the Abbey of San Nicola, the archaeological area of Casale di Madonna del Piano and the Civic Archaeological Museum.
Civita di Bagnoregio
The dying city, as it is called, is a village that leaves everyone speechless. The village, in fact, is reached by crossing a narrow 300-meter suspension bridge. Absolutely to be discovered!
Collalto Sabino
The castle, stone houses and narrow streets will take you to a timeless place where silence soothes the soul. Collalto Sabino is particularly known for its oil production, definitely worth trying if you pass through here.
Leaf
From this small town, made up of ancient buildings, you can admire the Tiber River, the Sabatini and Cimini mountains, and Mount Soratte-a place of worship of the Sabines, Etruscans and Romans.
Medieval Gaeta
Where there is one of the most beautiful seaside places in Lazio, there also stands a romantic and timeless village. Gaeta’s museum center is worth seeing.
Greccio
This village enchants the visitor’s heart. Discover the Franciscan Sanctuary of the Nativity (world famous) and the Greccio Historic Center.
Nemi
In the Castelli Romani we find this lakeside village that has become famous for its strawberry festival. But it is also worth visiting at other times of the year: there are very romantic little restaurants!
Orvinio
Set in the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park, Orvinio allows you to discover a complex of buildings and towers built in various eras. It also offers a very beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.
Pico
With its stairways, this Latium village makes it possible to walk and explore the structures of the past; the castle with its garden and churches. Hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking can also be arranged.
Ronciglione
The village near Lake Vico was also honored on the Rai Kilimangiaro program. Find, in fact, an article of ours exclusively dedicated to the beauties of Ronciglione.
San Felice Circeo
Another destination to discover a short distance from Rome is San Felice Circeo. A beautiful seaside place that comes alive especially in summer. We recommend seeing the Panoramic Garden of Vigna La Corte.
Sperlonga
The pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, that is how Sperlonga is called. In fact, it is a very characteristic village made up of ups and downs. If you get to the top, where there is a square with restaurants and bars, you can admire the panorama overlooking the sea.
Subiaco
In Subiaco is the only surviving monastery of those founded by St. Benedict of Norcia in the Aniene valley: St. Scholastica (the oldest in the world of the Benedictine order). It is also a place to discover for the natural landscapes, you can do many outdoor activities, especially during the warm season.
Sutri
The ancient town of Sutri is the fourth stop on the Via Francigena. Many activities can be planned here as well, such as horseback riding.
Torre Alfina
A fairy-tale and very romantic castle is located in this Latium village, with Renaissance-style gardens and courtyards. Recently, the manor has been opened to the public and can be visited (with prior reservation).
Ventotene
Located on a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, this fishing village is characterized by small colorful houses and lots of tranquility. Over time, it has preserved some traces left by the ancient Romans such as the harbor and the pozzillo. Ventotene played an important role during the years of fascism, where some opponents of the regime wrote the “Ventotene Manifesto.”
Vitorchiano
In Vitorchiano, where the cavatello festival is held, you can admire the castle walls, the ancient fortress and the many churches in the village. A little place to visit on the weekend where you can also eat well (try the cavatello vitorchianese).
