We’ve already told you about Baffetto, the historic pizzeria that delights everyone with its traditional pizzas. If there’s too long a line, since you can’t make reservations, but you’re in the center and want to eat a thin-crust pizza, we recommend another place just a short distance away.
An authentic, chaotic, and “genuine” experience
Founded in 1986 by Carlo Muzi, it is located in Vicolo Savelli, a stone’s throw from Piazza Navona. At La Montecarlo pizzeria, forget about formal service. Here, the atmosphere is lively, noisy, and spartan. The waiters are fast and always have a joke at the ready, just like the owner. This is not the place for you if you are looking for intimacy and an elegant atmosphere.
Their battle cry is the famous “Se voi ‘na pizza dillo!” (If you want a pizza, say so!), which perfectly sums up the restaurant’s straightforward philosophy. Even the napkins reflect the friendly atmosphere at La Montecarlo.
The pizzeria has both an outdoor area, covered in winter, and two indoor dining rooms. The service is fast. You often eat at tables close to other customers, and the placemats are made of paper.
On the walls, there are photographs of the VIPs who have frequented the restaurant.
What to eat
The cuisine is traditional Roman, without frills. Here you can eat the classic Roman pizza, which is very thin and crispy, served on a tray. Pizzas start at €8, for example the Marinara and Margherita. The “Montecarlo” (with mushrooms, artichokes, sausage, egg, peppers, onion, and olives) is the house specialty (€14).
As for fried foods, the menu includes supplì (a great classic), along with zucchini flowers and cod fillets. The Roman-style artichokes are also worth trying.
Although it is a pizzeria, many people go there for Roman dishes such as Carbonara or Amatriciana (€12), served in generous portions.
Despite being in the heart of the historic center, it remains one of the cheapest places with the best value for money in the area. It is closed on Mondays.
