Great news for those already packing their bags and sunscreen: the Lazio coastline has never been in better shape. According to the latest ARPA data from the 2025 monitoring, the quality of the sea in Lazio has reached historic highs, with 93% of the waters classified as “excellent.” The most significant finding for the 2026 season? For the first time, there are no “poor” areas.
You might even consider having an aperitif in Fregene.
Destinations of Excellence: Where the Sea Is at Its Best
If you’re looking for a “perfect score” (100% excellent areas), these are the destinations that passed with flying colors.
Province of Latina:
- Sabaudia
- San Felice Circeo
- Sperlonga
- Gaeta
Province of Rome:
- Civitavecchia
- Ladispoli
- Nettuno
- Fiumicino (achieving the highest recognition for the first time)
This ranking wouldn’t be complete without the beautiful Pontine Islands: Ponza, Ventotene, Palmarola, Zannone, and Santo Stefano, which confirm their status as unspoiled paradises with 100% excellent water.
Not just the sea: the triumph of the lakes
If you prefer freshwater, the situation is nearly perfect. 99% of lake areas were rated excellent. You can’t go wrong at: the Vico and Bolsena Lakes in the Viterbo area, Bracciano, Martignano, and Nemi ( Rome area), Turanoand Salto ( Rieti area), San Puoto and Lungo (Latina).
The snapshot taken by the Lazio Region and ARPA shows a region reaping the benefits of strict monitoring: 206 excellent areas out of a total of 221 (4 more than last year). 6% of waters are “good” and only a residual 3% are “sufficient.” Zero polluted or poor areas.
Note for swimmers: Technical zones such as ports, military areas, and river mouths remain off-limits for swimming, as required by current regulations.
