Artists, such as Gina Lollobrigida, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina, Elsa Morante and Alberto Moravia, loved this island for its tranquility and beauty. For Gigi Proietti it was paradise, and in fact he had his family home there.
Among the Pontine islands, we find Ponza: an enchanting island that knows how to conquer anyone who visits it thanks to its unique combination of wild nature, crystal clear sea and authentic atmosphere. And it has also conquered Gianni Morandi, who is spending his vacation on the island together with his wife.
What to see
One of the best ways to discover it is to tour the island by boat, as Morandi is doing; and from the videos he posts on Instagram you can admire the beauty of Ponza’s sea and views. Don’t miss its sea caves, stacks and hidden coves, such as the striking Grotte di Pilato or Grotta degli Smeraldi, true natural jewels that leave you breathless.
The Bourbon port, with its colorful houses and lively clubs, is the beating heart of Ponza, perfect for strolling, shopping or enjoying an aperitif at sunset. In the historic center, among alleys and stairways, you can breathe in the most authentic soul of the island, with historic churches and historic clubs such as the famous Bar Tripoli.
For those who enjoy walking, scenic paths to Monte Guardia, the highest point on the island, or to the Guardia Lighthouse offer breathtaking views of the sea and rugged coastline. Beaches and coves, such as Chiaia di Luna, Cala Feola and Piscine Naturali, are perfect for relaxing and diving into clear, turquoise waters. There is also no shortage of characteristic cave houses, carved into the rock, that tell the story and tradition of Ponza.
The island can be reached from the port of Anzio by ferry.
What to eat
Ponza cuisine is another great reason to visit the island: simple but flavorful dishes that enhance the products of the sea and the land. Spaghetti with spider crab, linguine with lobster or scampi, fish brodetto and rabbit alla ponzese are just some of the specialties to try. Desserts, such as torta di ricotta and pastiera ponzese, close each meal on a sweet note. Several restaurants, including the acclaimed Michelin-starred Acqua Pazza, offer fine dining experiences.
