There is something magical about seeing whole expanses of sunflowers mocking the sun, rotating their corolla to the rhythm of the sunrise. Did you know that this botanical dance is called heliotropism? In Lazio, this little summer festival is repeated every year, giving yellow vistas perfect for social snaps, original out-of-town trips and a rejuvenating break in touch with nature.
What is the best time to visit a sunflower field in Lazio?
Sunflower blossoming in Lazio begins in late June, but it is between July and early August that the fields are at their most beautiful. Therefore, the ideal time to visit a sunflower field is definitely between the first and third week of July. At this time, the yellow expanses are thicker and more scenic, ideal for a nature walk or a few snaps to share.
After mid-August, the flowers begin to wilt. If you want to visit private fields, best to check first for updated dates, which can vary slightly each year.
So let’s go find out where to see sunflowers in Lazio and have an unforgettable nature experience!
Tuscia Flower
About an hour and a half from Rome, in Viterbo, is Tuscia Flower, a park with 15 ornamental varieties of sunflowers: from classic yellow to rare tones such as orange, pink and vanilla. The ticket (€7 adults including 7 flowers, €5 children with 5) allows DIY picking and creating your perfect bouquet. You can take a photo break on their installations: a window to the field and an oversize living room, perfect for memorable selfies. It is open daily, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 11:30 p.m.; Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: Str. Teverina, Province of Viterbo. One kilometer from the town of Viterbo.
On the Rome-Civitavecchia road, at Santa Severa.
Along the Rome-Civitavecchia highway, near Santa Severa, alternating full expanses of sunflowers are visible for free from the road. The wild beauty of these yellow meadows stands out against the blue sea and sky, ideal if only to stop the car, take a photo and breathe in the summer air. Some areas offer food trucks or even free collection, depending on local management.
Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve
In the heart of Tuscia, among the hills of Acquapendente, the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve welcomes summer with wide yellow patches of sunflowers nestled among centuries-old forests, vineyards and flower-filled meadows. Here, after years of agricultural neglect, nature has revived: 2,893 protected hectares of oaks, streams and rare orchids are home not only to expanses of sunflowers, but also to an interactive Flower Museum full of botanical curiosities.
Pontine countryside
Between Nettuno and Latina, the Pontine countryside holds little summer gems all waiting to be discovered. It is not uncommon, driving along the back roads, to come across expanses of sunflowers silhouetted against the clear sky. We recommend a detour to the Nuova Fattoria farmhouse, near Torre Astura: here, in addition to flowers, you can find farm animals, neat rows of vines and perfect corners for a rustic aperitif in the open air. It is a place designed for those who love simplicity, slow days and nature that surprises without too many special effects.
Rivodutri and the Sacred Valley
Just minutes from Rieti, amid the unspoiled landscapes of the Sacred Valley, Rivodutri offers one of the most striking views of Lazio in summer. Sunflower fields stretch softly at the foot of the mountains, among scenic roads and small villages with an authentic flavor. Making it all the more special is the proximity to the Santa Susanna spring, one of the largest in Europe. A slow walk or bike ride is enough to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and vibrant colors of this little-known but truly photogenic corner.
