If you love cream-filled pastries, you should know that just a short walk from the “Colli Albani” Metro A station, there’s a historic shop offering Neapolitan specialties. It’s no coincidence that the Savarese pastry shop won an award for its Neapolitan pastiera (placing second in the national competition).
Cream puffs, zeppole, and much more
It’s common during holidays (Father’s Day, Easter, Christmas, Carnival, etc.) to find a long line of people waiting at this shop (where you can also have breakfast or a snack).
Founded in 1961, the pastry shop is run by the three Savarese sisters—Pina, Grazia, and Piera—who are originally from Sieti (Salerno). The atmosphere is typical of an old-fashioned artisanal shop, where the welcome is warm and friendly.
During the holiday season, they make roccoccò, mostaccioli, susamielli, struffoli, and savory casatielli, as well as giant zeppole shaped like cakes. Must-try desserts include: babà, sfogliatelle (both curly and shortbread varieties), St. Joseph’s zeppole, cream puffs (both baked and fried; 36 euros per kg), and assorted mini pastries. But also tarts (such as sour cherry or apricot), tea cookies, and traditional cakes.
Recently, the €15 “golden cappuccino,” served with small cookies, caught the attention of visitors.
