In the heart of Trastevere, Bar San Calisto stands as an exception to inflation, offering artisanal gelato starting at just 1 euro. Although ISTAT data show an increase in gelato prices over the past five years, this historic spot maintains its affordable prices. As confirmed by the price list, takeout gelato costs 1.00 € for a small scoop, 1.50 € for a medium , and 2.00 € for a large.
Even after a recent renovation, the owner decided to preserve the vintage decor and the authentic spirit of the place, resisting the area’s transformation into a tourist hotspot and the general price hikes in the neighborhood.
The History of the Shop

The history of this bar began in 1969 thanks to Marcello Forti, a native of the provinceof L’Aquila, who, after working various jobs in the restaurant industry, purchased the bar with his own savings.
Twelve flavors are available at the counter, including classic ice creams and coffee granita, perfect for hot summer days. In addition to being renowned for its desserts—including tiramisu made with Gentilini cookies—Bar San Calisto is a true institution for neighborhood socializing. It’s a gathering spot much loved by young people, students, and groups of friends, especially in the late afternoon and evening, creating a lively atmosphere that often spills out into the square in front of the bar.
Drinks also remain affordably priced for downtown Rome: a Spritz, for example, is served for €4.00 and Prosecco for €2.80.
It’s open every day from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. In fact, it’s also a popular spot for breakfast—you can find the legendary maritozzi with cream—and depending on the time of day, there are fewer people, making it a quiet and authentic spot in the heart of the city. So, yes, in additionto aperitifs, it’s also a great choice for starting your day with coffee and a croissant.
