We are talking about Sant’Angelo di Roccalvecce, a small hamlet in the province of Viterbo which, in recent years, has completely reinvented itself, earning the evocative nickname of “Fairytale Village.”
Why is it called the Fairy Tale Village and what to see
The history of this village has not always been rosy. Like many small towns in Tuscia, Sant’Angelo was at risk of oblivion and depopulation. The turning point came in 2016 thanks to an initiative by the Associazione Culturale Arte e Spettacolo (ACAS), which decided to focus on creativity to breathe new life into the quiet streets. The idea was as simple as it was ambitious: to transform the village into an open-air art gallery dedicated to fantasy literature.
Today, walking through the village means coming across giant posters depicting the most iconic characters of our childhood. It is not uncommon to turn a corner and come face to face with the Little Prince tending to his rose, or to catch a glimpse of the Cheshire Cat ‘s sly smile as he watches passers-by from the top of a facade. From the adventures of Alice in Wonderland to Hansel and Gretel’s house full of sweets , each work is designed to blend harmoniously with the rural architecture of the place.
In this corner of Lazio, the story is told not only through words, but also through the vibrant colors of artists who have transformed an almost forgotten village into a tourist destination of international importance.
Beyond murals: an ongoing project Sant’Angelo’s success does not stop at painting
The urban project is constantly evolving and aims to enrich the visitor experience with: sculptural installations that make the route three-dimensional; colorful mosaicsthat decorate hidden corners and small squares; handcrafted details that evoke fantastical themes in every detail of the street furniture.
For those who are not satisfied with a short walk, the visit can be extended to the so-called “Sentiero dei Castelli delle Fiabe” (Fairy Tale Castles Trail ). This is a hiking trail that connects Sant’Angelo to the neighboring municipalities, allowing you to combine your passion for art with that for trekking and discovering the castles that dot the Viterbo area.
