On social media a short time ago, a video about Rome went viral showing the difficulty for tourists to admire some of the city’s tourist attractions due to ongoing works. Among these attractions momentarily “covered” is the famous Trevi Fountain, also known worldwide for the coin toss that allows people to make a personal wish in the Eternal City.
Good news for visitors
Good news for those who want to visit Rome concerns the walkway inside the Trevi Fountain, which was inaugurated last weekend in the presence of Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Culture Councillor Massimiliano Smeriglio, and Superintendent of Cultural Heritage Claudio Parise Presicce. The walkway will allow visitors to admire the masterpiece by Nicola Salvi (author of the famous fountain) from a new perspective during the restoration work, which includes interventions on the lovers’ fountain.
The walkway will be accessible Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and every other day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., offering a unique experience for about 500,000 people.
Why is maintenance work being carried out at the Trevi Fountain?
The mayor stressed the importance of the work for the fountain’s preservation and explained that the restricted access system will allow 130 people at a time to enjoy the close-up view.
Superintendent Presicce highlighted the need for the extraordinary maintenance to remove biological patina, restore grout, and remove limestone deposits.
