There are about 200 theaters or spaces dedicated to programming live performances in Rome, so why drive 2 hours to see another one? Because in Italy, not far from the capital, there is the smallest theater in the world with only 99 seats, divided between stalls and 22 boxes. A real gem to discover.
The theater in question is in the Goldonian style, with three basic elements that characterize Italian-style theaters: wooden boxes, a bell-shaped floor plan and a ceiling (plafone) built using the camorcanna technique. It is very elegant and transports you to other times…. The hall measures about 68 m².
In the province of Perugia a theater to discover
We are talking about the Teatro della Concordia, located in Monte Castello di Vibio, Umbria, famous for being the smallest Italian-style theater in the world. It was built in the early 19th century, during the period of Napoleonic occupation, and opened in 1808. The name “Concordia” recalls the ideals of liberty, equality and brotherhood inspired by the French Revolution, values that were intended to be symbolically celebrated by the builders of the space.
The theater was closed due to unfit for use in 1951, and reopened after restoration between 1981 and 1993, thanks in part to European funds and the voluntary efforts of the local community and the Concordia Theater Society.
Today the theater is active and hosts theater seasons, tours, cultural events, conferences and civil weddings. So, you can be a spectator at the world’s smallest theater.
