If you are looking for a secret and enchanted place to discover a stone’s throw from Rome, the Secret Garden of the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo is the destination for you. Nestled among the hills of the Castelli Romani and overlooking the charming Lake Albano, this hidden corner is a treasure chest of history, art and nature that few people really know.
A little-known but undiscovered garden

The garden, an integral part of the Papal Villas, stretches over the remains of the ancient Roman villa of Domitian and reveals a magical atmosphere made of fountains, Baroque statues and centuries-old trees. It is not only a place of scenic beauty, but a true symbol of a centuries-old tradition: from Urban VIII Barberini to Clement XIV, many pontiffs have tended these spaces, transforming them into a haven of peace and meditation.
The heart of the garden is a set of romantic paths and panoramic views, ideal for strolling, breathing in ancient scents and admiring nature in all seasons. What’s more, the Vatican-sponsored enhancement project also combines history with a green focus: an organic farm produces oil, wine and natural products, offering an authentic experience that combines culture and sustainability.
Products grown and raised on the farm are sold to employees and former employees of the Papal Villas and their families. Some of the produce goes to Annona, the supermarket inside Vatican City.
How to see the secret garden
The opening to the public is part of a larger project to enhance the Papal Villas and their natural and cultural treasures, which have long been accessible with guided tours and initiatives that highlight the rich history and sustainability of this unique complex.
