We had already told you about the towns with fewer inhabitants in Lazio, but today we want to dwell on the smallest one in the region. Let’s talk about Marcetelli: the smallest town in Lazio by number of inhabitants, with less than 60 residents. A small community that does not struggle to know itself.
What to see in Marcetelli
Besides having few inhabitants, this village is considered a true medieval jewel perched on a rocky outcrop, with an ancient historic center set in the natural landscape of the Monti Navegna and Cervia Nature Reserve. It will certainly be evocative to live in Marcetelli.
A trip from Rome is recommended to admire the historic center with its steep cobbled streets and houses made of living stone, the various churches, such as the Church of San Venanzio Martire and San Martino with a characteristic bell tower, the Palazzo Barberini (historic home of the noble family), and the Museum “La bottega del cerchiaro,” dedicated to the artisanal production of barrels.
In addition, the village allows for beautiful views from the natural terrace over Valle del Salto and Monte Navegna.
Nearby Excursions
Marcetelli is located along the Natural Parks Trail, immersed in the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve. Nearby is Monte Santo, with paths immersed in chestnut and ancient beech groves, ideal for trekking and scenic excursions. Paths through forests and small historic villages nearby allow you to experience a day of nature and history near Rome.
The village is 90 km from the capital, which can be covered in about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car. It can be visited throughout the year, but in autumn there is a more fascinating atmosphere, thanks to the colors of nature.
What to eat

Marcetelli and its surroundings are famous for the sweet and delicate “Castagna Rossa del Cicolano,” the star of local festivals and dishes. It will be a joy for the palate to try typical Sabine dishes with mushrooms, local meats, chestnuts and natural products of the area.
The “Sagra della Castagna Rossa del Cicolano” in November, with tastings, free roasted chestnuts and musical entertainment is a popular event.
