Bolzano is preparing to put on its most festive dress with the return of the Christmas Market, the event that has been brightening up winter in South Tyrol for more than two decades. The 2025/2026 edition is set to welcome visitors from all over the world, transforming the city into a unique sensory experience, enveloped by the intense scent of cinnamon, typical sweets and mulled wine.
When Italy’s largest market opens
The magic will officially begin on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025 at 5 p.m. with the opening ceremony, the lighting of the big Christmas tree and the nativity scene. The Market will remain open until Epiphany, January 6, 2026. This year, the Christmas atmosphere expands beyond the traditional Walther Square. The event also invades with colors, sounds and scents the adjacent Christmas Park, a dedicated area where one can admire original handicrafts and breathe in the warmth of the holidays.
The iconic craftsmen’s cottages, laden with unique gift ideas and decorations, will stretch along Via Isarco, starting from the Cathedral all the way to the Capuchin Park. The whole city joins in a festive embrace, turning every street into a stage of Christmas sounds and merry voices.
Please note: The Market will be closed on Dec. 25, 2025, and the opening on 11/27/11 will have reduced hours for booths and delis.

The journey for those leaving from the South Central
For those traveling from cities like Rome, the journey is worth the investment. Bolzano can be conveniently reached by high-speed train (Frecciarossa) in about 5 hours from Roma Termini or Tiburtina. The train ride offers the convenience of arriving directly in the center, allowing you to start exploring the Mercatino immediately without stress.
In case of a long weekend, we recommend, in order to explore the charming neighboring towns such as the beautiful Brixen, to consider the option of renting a car locally or using local transportation.
