It has now been more than 20 years since The Fabulous World of Amélie captivated viewers with its kindness in movie theaters. The film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou (Amélie) was filmed in the city of love. And we want you to discover a new side of Paris, a picturesque city that is only 2 hours away, by plane, from Rome. Ideal for a different weekend away from the Eternal City.
The plot
The film tells the story of Amélie Poulain, a young Parisian woman with a difficult and lonely childhood, marked by anaffective parents and the early loss of her mother. Growing up in isolation, she develops a vivid imagination and a unique sensitivity, which lead her to observe and understand the most hidden details of life and the people around her.
The turning point in her existence occurs when she accidentally finds a box of mementos belonging to a man who lived decades earlier in her apartment. Returning it to him, she discovers the joy of making others happy and decides to devote herself to small altruistic gestures, but struggles to deal with her own desires, including her love for Nino Quincampoix.
Amélie’s Paris
Amélie’s Paris is depicted as a magical and timeless place where every small gesture can have a profound impact. Here is a different itinerary of the French capital.
Montmartre
First stop at Café des Deux Moulins (15 Rue Lepic): the café where Amélie works, an icon of the film. Here you can enjoy a crème brûlée and break the crust as she does.
Then again Maison Collignon (Au Marché de la Butte, Rue des Trois Frères), the grocery store frequented by Amélie, Rue Saint-Vincent and Rue Lamarck, picturesque places where Amélie strolls and helps the blind man by describing what he sees, and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart with the nearby square (the scene where Amélie leaves blue arrows to guide Nino).
Other iconic places
Notre-Dame, the famous cathedral, appears early in the film, linked to the tragic death of Amélie’s mother. And then Pont des Arts (romantic place where Amélie reflects on her life and her desire to help others), Canal Saint-Martin (one of the most poetic scenes in the film) and Rue Mouffetard (street where Amélie returns the box of memories to Mr. Bretodeau).
If you happen to travel by metro, the most frequent stations in the film are Lamarck-Caulaincourt, Abbesses and La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle.
