From the train, panoramic views ignited by autumn colors
The renowned foliage train will return again this year, from October 11 to November 16. Just think that the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, according to the famous publishing house Lonely Planet, is among the ten most beautiful in the world. In autumn, in fact, the route of the railway becomes a painting with forests that turn yellow, orange, reddish and brown. A natural spectacle that can be admired right from the train.
On the journey from Domodossola (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province) to Locarno (Switzerland), wild valleys are crossed. The 52-kilometer train ride includes an intermediate stop on the outward journey or on the return trip to give the opportunity to discover nearby places such as Re, Santa Maria Maggiore, Malesco, Druogno, etc.
The opening of sales has already started. The price of the round-trip ticket (starting from 36 euros) includes seat reservation, any intermediate stop (to be reserved online) and any supplement to travel on board the scenic trains. You can already purchase the ticket online.
Departures there are daily at various times (travel time is no more than 2 hours). All the trains you find listed (Centovalli Express, Panoramic, International) run the same route as the Foliage.
How to get to the Foliage train from Rome?

The journey takes about two hours and departs at different times each day. For those leaving from Rome, there are no direct high-speed trains: the fastest route involves a trip to Milan (about 3 hours) and from there a train to Domodossola (about 1 hour and 40 minutes). Alternatively, it is possible to reach the start by car in about 7 hours.
Trip to Domodossola
Once you arrive in Domodossola by train, it is well worth a visit to this charming Alpine town. In the historic center you will find Renaissance squares such as Piazza Mercato, elegant historic buildings (such as Palazzo Silva), ancient medieval streets (such as Via Briona), and the Collegiate Church of San Bartolomeo. In addition, the traditional Domodossola Market takes place on Saturdays.
Among the main attractions is the Sacro Monte Calvario of Domodossola, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, a monumental complex surrounded by nature that offers spiritual paths, trails and breathtaking views. Also nearby is the Medieval Castle of Mattarella. In short, there is no shortage of places to discover!
