Food & Wine‘s second annual Global Tastemakers Awards celebrates food and beverage markets around the world, highlighting both the city’s history and the dishes that make it a destination worth discovering. The award-winning magazine asked its panel of travel and culinary experts to share with readers their top-rated markets.
In all, 13 markets were identified, dream destinations for all food lovers. Two Roman places are on the list:
Campo de’ Fiori
Campo de’ Fiori for us Romans is a n’pezzo de core. As noted on the food and wine site, “It is Rome’s outdoor market par excellence, bustling from dawn to dusk. It is a particularly fun place to visit early in the day because it is filled with fresh flowers that give the air a decidedly pleasant scent. Stick around to buy some local produce to take back to your hotel or vacation rental and feel like a real local, and then head to nearby restaurants such as Settimio al Pellegrino and grab a scoop of gelato at Gelateria La Romana. Go ahead and make it two scoops.”
The Testaccio Market
“We know that Rome has Campo de’ Fiori, but don’t miss its smaller cousin, the Testaccio Market,” the magazine informs. “Here you can sample all the great produce and shop in some quaint boutiques. However, if you’re short on time, head to Casa Manco, a pizzeria that offers slices so good you’ll want an encore.”
