On October 1, the new rate policy went into effect, introducing a fee for overnight parking at ATAC park-and-ride facilities in Rome—a measure aimed at combating the misuse of these areas as low-cost private parking spaces.
The measure is currently in effect at the Conca d’Oro, Annibaliano, and Jonio facilities, with the goal of gradually expanding it to the entire city network.
Details of the new nighttime rate
Overnight parking costs €0.80 per hour or fraction thereof. This fee applies to all users, including Metrebus pass holders ( monthly or annual) who until now enjoyed completely free parking. People with disabilities are exempt from payment.
Payment begins during the parking lots’ closing hours: from 12:15 a.m. to 5:15 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 2:15 a.m. to 5:15 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. During these hours, the facilities are closed; therefore, it is not possible to retrieve your car until they reopen in the morning. For occasional users, the fee is calculated and automatically added at the time of exit. Metrebus pass holders, for whom daytime parking remains free, must instead enter their license plate number at the payment kiosk to pay the overnight fee before retrieving their vehicle.
The reasons behind the measure
Park-and-ride facilities, located near metro stations (Lines A, B, and C), commuter rail stations, and bus terminals, are designed to encourage intermodal travel: leaving your car on the outskirts and reaching the city center by public transit. As reported by Roma Today, in recent years, however, the exemption provided by the Metrebus pass (which costs about 250 euros per year) has led many residents to occupy the parking spaces permanently. This overcrowding has systematically deprived commuters of parking spots, undermining the original purpose of the parking areas.
The new nighttime fee, which amounts to approximately 1,200 euros per year, was designed specifically to discourage long-term parking.
The ATAC parking network
Rome’s park-and-ride system includes several strategic locations (such as Anagnina, Cipro, Laurentina, Ponte Mammolo, Rebibbia, and Saxa Rubra). In all these areas, displaying or registering the “Metrebus Parking” pass will continue to guarantee free parking during daytime hours.
In addition to park-and-ride facilities, the city also has parking lots with unrestricted rates, located in high-traffic areas (such as Auditorium, Partigiani, Metronio, Trieste, and Trastevere). These facilities operate under specific pricing structures designed to encourage vehicle turnover and meet the needs of targeted groups such as tourists and local workers.
