Are you looking for an escape from the Roman routine that has the flavor of an ancient legend? Less than two hours from the capital, there is a place where the borders between Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany blur, offering a scene that seems to have sprung from the pen of a fairy-tale illustrator: the Castle of Torre Alfina.
That’s why this destination deserves a place of honor on your wish list for next weekend
Perched at an altitude of over 600 meters, the village of Torre Alfina (rightfully counted among Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages) is dominated by a monumental fortress that takes your breath away. Its imposing crenellated towers of dark stone evoke a chivalric atmosphere, so much so that it is often compared to Camelot Castle.
Its history is a tapestry of nobility and ambition. Long the residence of the Monaldeschi della Cervara family, it later passed to the Borbone del Monte family. At the end of the 19th century, the banker Edoardo Cahen d’Anvers oversaw a masterful restoration, entrusting it to the architect Giuseppe Partini, who gave it the refined, neo-Gothic appearance we admire today.

The natural oasis: the monumental forest of Sasseto
Although the castle is the architectural star, the real magic unfolds at its feet. Torre Alfina is home to one of the most fascinating natural oases in central Italy: the Bosco del Sasseto. Described by many as the “Snow White Forest, ” it is a unique ecosystem where centuries-old trees with gnarled roots intertwine over moss-covered lava boulders.
Walking along its paths means immersing yourself in an ancestral silence, a sensory experience that perfectly complements a visit to the fortress, offering a wild and authentic connection with nature. For information and reservations: boscodelsasseto@comuneacquapendente.it.
