The origins of tiramisu are a matter of debate, the dispute being mainly between Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In the capital city it is found on almost every restaurant menu (as indeed in the rest of the world). One legend has it that the dessert was created by a restaurant owner to regain her strength after giving birth, with the help of her mother-in-law and some experienced pastry chefs
Tiramisu is believed to have been invented in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It may have evolved from earlier local recipes, such as“sbatudin,” a mixture of egg yolk and sugar used as a restorative.
Not everyone knows that this dessert did not appear in cookbooks until the 1960s and was first mentioned in an Italian dictionary in 1980. In Italy its day is celebrated on March 21 (in Treviso it is celebrated on October 3).
The renowned downtown pastry shop that makes the best tiramisu
Two Sizes is a famous pastry shop in Rome known for its delicious tiramisu. Located at 88 Via del Governo Vecchio, in the heart of the city, this small store has become a must for dessert lovers. And we’re not saying that… In fact, on Tik Tok you can find plenty of videos of citizens and tourists showcasing the city’s No. 1 tiramisu.
Two Sizes offers five variations of tiramisu:
- Classic (called “original”)
- Pistachio
- Strawberry
- Caramel
- Peanut butter
Each tiramisu comes in two sizes: small (€2.50) and large (€3.50). Classic tiramisu is prized for the perfect balance of sweetness and intensity, with well-soaked ladyfingers and a velvety mascarpone cream.
The pastry shop is very popular and there is often a long line, but service is fast. The place is small and does not offer seating, so the desserts are take-out (containers make it easy to eat while walking around Rome).
In addition to tiramisu, they also offer Sicilian cannoli. Despite its popularity among tourists, Two Sizes maintains a high quality and is considered by many to be one of the best places for tiramisu in Rome.
Hours
Two Sizes is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Mondays when it is closed.
Tiramisu remains one of the most beloved and imitated Italian desserts around the world, with many variations having developed over the years. Will you try the one at Two Sizes?
