Travel Guide: From Rome to Heinfels
Reaching East Tyrol from the capital requires careful planning, given the distance of about 700–750 km. Yes, it’s no walk in the park, but the experience and the enchanting places to visit are well worth the long journey.
By car (the most flexible option), the journey takes about 7.5 hours (traffic permitting). By train (the scenic option), however, you must take a Frecciarossa or Italo from Roma Termini to Verona Porta Nuova or Fortezza, then board the local Val Pusteria train toward San Candido, and from San Candido take a short ride on an Austrian train (ÖBB) or bus to the Sillian/Heinfels station. The fastest option is plane + car, with a flight from Rome (FCO) to Venice (VCE) and a rental car from Venice (a drive of about 2.5 hours to reach your destination).
