The Arco di Travertino metro and bus stop is an important connection point in the city, and work has begun to transform this area into a civic hub. The new project includes the creation of a place dedicated to sociality and culture.
The Capitoline Council, as Roma Today reports, has earmarked 50 million euros of PNRR funds for “new cultural and innovation civic poles,” divided among more than 20 energy efficiency upgrades and 9 new openings. Of these, the most significant project is the facility at the Arco di Travertino, which will receive about 12 million euros, making it the most expensive.
Despite initial delays, the work is scheduled for completion in December 2026, thanks to the extension granted for projects related to civic hubs.
How Arco di Travertino will become
The target building is located at the intersection of Via Arco di Travertino and Via Carroceto in Rome’s 7th Municipality, adjacent to the interchange and ATAC bus terminus. The facility, which covers more than 5,000 square meters, includes a covered plaza located above a public parking lot on three underground levels, currently the only part in use.
The plan calls for the transformation of the covered plaza into a multipurpose civic hub, retaining the existing wooden structure and roof, but completely reorganizing the interior spaces. The new functions will be structurally and architecturally independent, with the building divided into two levels:
Ground floor:
- Spaces dedicated to reception and meeting.
- An exhibition area
- An auditorium
- A music room with attached recording room
- A children’s space with a semi-exhibit function and independent access
- A refreshment area
First Floor:
- A new library with attached services, including reading area, study rooms, laboratories, consultation spaces
The public spaces will directly overlook the covered square in front, making the area a focal point for sociality and culture.
The intervention is configured as an urban redevelopment aimed at transforming an underutilized area into a modern and accessible multipurpose center.
However, the financing does not include the purchase of the furniture, according to Roma Today, an issue that will have to be resolved before the opening.
