This morning, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri inaugurated the new Piazza dei Cinquecento, located in front of Termini Station. This is a major urban redevelopment project, representing the largest Jubilee 2025 intervention in terms of area, covering a total of about 9 hectares.
The area involved in the redevelopment is 80,000 square meters, with 45,000 square meters dedicated exclusively to the perimeter of the square.
About 30,000 square meters of marble and stone, as well as other materials, were used for this work.
Spaces for bus terminals and the cab dock were reorganized, making the square a strategic junction for city mobility and a welcoming “gateway” for pilgrims and tourists arriving in the capital.
The works
Work began in October 2023 and has already reached 85 percent completion for the second lot, originally scheduled for 2026. Final completion of the entire project is expected by the summer of 2026, ahead of schedule.
The project aims to improve pedestrian accessibility, integrate the square with the surrounding urban fabric, and enhance nearby historical monuments, such as the Baths of Diocletian, the Servian Walls, and the Palazzo Massimo Museum. In addition, new green spaces and bike lanes have been created, promoting greater environmental sustainability.
With this redevelopment, Piazza dei Cinquecento is transformed into a symbol of urban regeneration and welcome, ready to host millions of visitors during the Jubilee and to serve Roman citizens with safer and more functional spaces.
