The inauguration of the new Piazza Pia, an ambitious and symbolic project for Jubilee 2025, was held today. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by the highest institutional and religious officials: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Mayor of Rome and Special Commissioner for the Jubilee Roberto Gualtieri, Monsignor Rino Fisichella, papal delegate for the Jubilee, Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Lazio Region President Francesco Rocca, Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, Anas CEO Aldo Isi, Anas President Edoardo Valente, and Councillor for Public Works Ornella Segnalini.
What the new square looks like
The redevelopment of Piazza Pia involved pedestrianizing the area and extending the underpass of Lungotevere in Sassia. This was a complex engineering work completed in just 450 days. The project involved the construction of an underground roadway that also required the relocation of sewer collectors. The square, located between Castel Sant’Angelo and Via della Conciliazione, now represents a new urban pedestrian space that can accommodate up to 150,000 people and is enriched with fountains, steps and trees.
A symbolic work for Rome and the Jubilee
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed great satisfaction with the achievement,“Few believed in it but we did it. The Jubilee gives Rome a beautiful square. We had to make a real race against time, which involved a challenge. Here 110 workers worked for 450 days, they never stopped working three shifts 24 hours a day: I want to express my gratitude on behalf of Rome to all those who made it possible to achieve this result. A reckless challenge, we had courage.”
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also stressed the importance of the work: “When we want things in Italy we are able to do them, we are able to do them on time and in compliance with the rules, even the complex ones of a city like Rome that has many constraints. We are satisfied and we have to remember that when we want things we do them well.”
New projects on the way
The inauguration of Piazza Pia is part of a broader plan of infrastructure interventions related to Jubilee 2025. After the handover of the Piazza della Repubblica area yesterday, other significant projects will be completed over the next year, including the Roma Termini, Ponte dell’Industria and Tor Vergata areas.
