The Grotta del Turco is a jewel set in the rock of Gaeta, located within the picturesque complex of the Santuario della Montagna Spaccata (on the promontory of Monte Orlando).
It is famous for its waters, which range from turquoise to deep cobalt blue, offering a setting that rivals the famous caves of Capri.
Here’s how to discover this magical place
Why is it special? The cave’s shape and the seabed create spectacular reflections. When the sun hits the water inside the rocky crevice, the colors become incredibly vivid.
According to religious tradition, the three crevices in the promontory were created at the moment of Christ’s death, when “the earth shook and the rocks split.” The cave’s name derives from a legend in which a Saracen sailor (a “Turk”), skeptical of the sacred origin of the fissure, placed his hand on the rock. Miraculously, the rock became as soft as wax, leaving a fingerprint that is still visible today along the descent.

How to get there and practical information
The entrance to the cave is located to the left of the church of the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity. To admire the cave, you must descend a staircase of 275 steps. The descent is scenic and very evocative, nestled between high cliff walls.
Viewing the cave from the sea is another way to fully appreciate the color of the water. Boats depart mainly from the Port of Gaeta (Molo Santa Maria) or from nearby Sperlonga. Average prices: Short tour (1 hour): About €20–€25 per person. Usually includes a passage under the Montagna Spaccata and the Grotta del Turco.
Access to the Sanctuary and the Montagna Spaccata is free (a donation is appreciated), while a small contribution, at the visitor’s discretion, is usually requested for the descent to the Grotta del Turco.
It is generally open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 2:30 PM to 5:45 PM (hours may vary slightly between summer and winter). Pets are not allowed.
It’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway, combining untamed nature, ancient legends, and one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Lazio.
How to get there from Rome (about 2.5 hours): by car, take Via Pontina (SS148) or Via Appia (SS7) toward Latina/Terracina/Gaeta. Alternatively, you can take the A1 highway to the Cassino exit and then follow the signs for Formia/Gaeta to the Sanctuary.
