Mount Terminillo, often nicknamed“the mountain of Rome” because of its relative proximity to the capital, is one of the major elevations of the Central Apennines, located in the province of Rieti.
It is a popular destination for winter sports and hiking, offering splendid views of the Monti Reatini, Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga mountains.
Snow activities and directions to get there from Rome
Terminillo offers a ski area, opening on December 13, with several opportunities for all mountain enthusiasts:
- Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding, the Monte Terminillo ski area has about 9.4 km of slopes served by 4 lifts (season permitting)
- Slopes: the slopes are distributed between Easy (2 km), Medium (6 km) and Difficult (1.4 km), suitable for different levels of experience, with altitudes between 1,506 and 1,868 meters
- Ski School: Private or group lessons are available for children, adults, beginners and experts at the Terminillo Italian Ski School
- Snowshoeing (Excursions with Snowshoes): snowshoeing is the most accessible and popular activity, suitable for families and those who want to enjoy the tranquility of the snow-covered forest: numerous guided trails are available, from easy daytime walks (about 3-4 hours) to more atmospheric excursions, often combined with dinners
- Cross-country skiing: for lovers of Nordic skiing, there are a number of loops of increasing difficulty
Many routes offer spectacular views and lead to refuges such as Rifugio Rinaldi, Sebastiani or Rifugio La Fossa. Depending on conditions and local offerings, you can also find guided ATV tours or e-bike snow trails.
How to Get to Mount Terminillo from Rome

Mount Terminillo is about 100-110 km from Rome, and is easily reached by car or public transport, although a change is necessary. By car (fastest solution) the journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes (traffic permitting).
By public transport the trip takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes or more, with a change in Rieti:
- Rome – Rieti bus: take the COTRAL bus from Rome’s Tiburtina Station (travel time about 1 hour and 40 minutes).
- Local Bus (Rieti – Terminillo): From Rieti Train Station (or the COTRAL terminus), take the city bus Line 513 operated by ASM, which connects Rieti to Terminillo (Pian de’ Valli). Rides on Line 513 are limited, especially on holidays.
