If you’re already dreaming of an aperitif by the sea in mild weather, this Spanish island in the Atlantic Ocean is the largest and most famous of the Canary Islands, renowned for its “eternal spring” climate. Temperatures are extremely pleasant year-round: in summer, the average is around 25°C, while in winter it stays around 18–19°C. The sea water is ideal for swimming, especially between July and September, when it reaches about 24°C. But there are even those who celebrate Christmas in the water.
What to See in Tenerife
The island has various microclimates, so you’ll find higher temperatures on the southern coast than on the northern coast. Tenerife is mainly divided into two major regions, which you can choose based on the type of trip you’d like to take. Southern Tenerife (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) is the sunniest and driest part of the island. Choose this area if you want to enjoy well-equipped sandy beaches, lively nightlife, water parks, and excellent family-friendly amenities.
Northern Tenerife (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, San Cristóbal de La Laguna) is the most authentic and green area, characterized by lush natural scenery. It’s perfect if you love spectacular landscapes and historic colonial-era villages and prefer a quieter, more rural atmosphere—though you should expect a slightly more humid and variable climate.
In the north, there are many attractions to see. The Anaga Rural Park is the green lung of the island’s northeast and a biosphere reserve. Meanwhile, the Cueva del Viento is one of the longest underground lava tubes in the world, located halfway up the mountainside. You can visit it by joining guided tours led by expert speleologists.
Towns worth visiting include: San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Garachico, Icod de los Vinos, and La Orotava. Puerto de la Cruz is the main tourist hub in the north. It retains the charm of a traditional fishing village and is famous for its black volcanic sand beaches and the Lago Martiánez saltwater pool complex.
