From Dec. 2024, Rome’s Teatro Aniene will host “Sissi, Rebellious Queen,” an exciting show dedicated to the life and contradictions of Elizabeth of Bavaria, known to all as Sissi. Beautiful, tragic and rebellious, the iconic Empress will live again on stage thanks to the work of Jessica Ferro and Pierdavide Carone. The play, written by Corrado Tedeschi and directed by Gianni Scuto, comes to life from an idea by Antonio Mocciola and Scuto himself, to recount the complexity of an unforgettable woman.
A journey into the soul of Sissi
“Sissi, Rebel Queen” will not be a simple historical narrative, but an intense exploration of the interiority of a female figure who marked an era. Born in Munich on December 24, 1837, Elizabeth Amalia Eugenia of Wittelsbach went down in history not only for her beauty, but also for her restless and nonconformist soul. The Austro-Hungarian court, with its strict rules, was never her natural habitat; Sissi constantly sought to escape from the impositions and constraints of her position, until the tragic epilogue of 1898, when she was assassinated by the anarchist Luigi Lucheni.
This performance starts from the very moment of her tragic death to reconstruct, through memories and emotions, the multifaceted identity of the woman behind the myth. On stage, her inner torments, the moments of fleeting happiness experienced among her beloved animals (dogs and horses in particular), her escapades, unconsummated passions and the heartbreaking grief over the premature loss of her children Rodolfo and Sofia will be explored.
Abandoning the traditional view of the “Sissi” immortalized by cinema as an icon of an imperial Vienna, the show aims to restore an authentic and profound portrait of the Empress. Between court waltzes and personal recollections, the viewer will discover a tormented, passionate and rebellious woman who constantly struggled with her identity crises and an existence too often marked by loneliness, regrets and suffering.
