For summer 2025, the Espresso Riviera, an overnight train operated by FS Treni Turistici Italiani that connects Rome directly with Liguria and the French Riviera, all the way to Marseille, is back. This connection is designed primarily for summer tourism and offers a slow and scenic travel experience along one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating coastlines.
The train will run until August 30, 2025, every Friday evening departing from Roma Termini; arriving in Marseille on Saturday morning. For the return: departure from Marseille on Saturday, arrival in Rome on Sunday morning. It is convenient for multi-day vacations, not a weekend.
The train runs through all of Liguria and the French Riviera, with stops at the following locations:
- Genoa Piazza Principe
- Savona
- Alassio
- Sanremo
- Ventimiglia
- Menton
- Monaco – Monte Carlo
- Nice
- Cannes
- St. Raphael
- Toulon
- Marseille
Connections are planned in Genoa with trains from Milan, making the link accessible even from northern Italy without changes. This is a summer trial, but evaluations are underway to make it permanent in the future.
Tickets and reservations
Tickets are available through all Trenitalia channels (online, ticket offices, self-service, agencies). Starting at 71 euros per ticket, departing at 7:57 pm from Termini and arriving in Genoa at 6:41 am. For those wishing to continue, the last stop is Marseille at 1:57 pm.
The overnight train, with couchettes and sleeping cars, allows you to spend a comfortable trip with a dining car, bar service and dedicated night staff on board. It is a “slow” and atmospheric journey, ideal for appreciating coastal landscapes. It is a service designed for tourists, but also convenient for business or study travelers between Lazio, Tuscany, Liguria and France.
The Espresso Riviera offers a sustainable and comfortable alternative to reach the most beautiful destinations of the Ligurian Riviera and the French Riviera, with all the charm of vintage train travel and modern comfort.
