The recent ranking, based on search trends and traveler experiences from Skyscanner, has identified the ten must-see coastal destinations on the Italian peninsula. From Caribbean-like oases in the south to rocky coves on the major islands, one gem in Lazio stands out in the ranking, boasting an unmatched advantage: its extreme proximity to the capital.
Chiaia di Luna: the Pontine gem just a few hours from Rome
Ranked second in this prestigious selection, Chiaia di Luna on the island of Ponza is a true masterpiece of nature, famous for its imposing cliff of light-colored tuff that hugs the crescent-shaped bay. Although today it is accessible and best admired primarily by sea, it remains one of the most powerful visual experiences in the Mediterranean.
The great appeal of this destination for those who live in or are visiting Rome is its short distance. Despite its wild and secluded atmosphere, Chiaia di Luna is easily accessible in a short time from the city.
By car or train, starting from Rome, simply head to the main ferry ports along the southern coast, such as Anzio, Terracina, San Felice Circeo, or Formia. The distance ranges from 60 to 130 km, translating to about 1 to 1.5 hours of travel.
Once you arrive at the port, hydrofoil or ferry connections take an average of 70 to 90 minutes to dock on the island. In less than three hours total from the center of Rome, you find yourself immersed in an unspoiled natural setting, making Ponza the ideal getaway (especially in June or September) not only for long vacations but also for weekends away from the city chaos.
The other Italian wonders in the ranking
In addition to this gem in Lazio, the selection of the top beaches for 2026 outlines a fascinating itinerary stretching the length of the peninsula.
Sicily places three locations in the ranking. We find Spiaggia dei Conigli in Lampedusa, a protected reserve with Caribbean-like hues; Cala Rossa in Favignana, a snorkeling paradise among wind-sculpted rocks; and the iconic Scala dei Turchi, famous for its white, stepped cliffs.
Two Sardinian destinations were honored : Cala Mariolu, accessible only by sea and famous for its turquoise waters and white pebbles, and Cala Spinosa, a hidden corner at Capo Testa dominated by granite rocks and an emerald-colored sea.
The mainland south enchants with views of the Faraglioni of Marina Piccola in Capri (Campania), the white cliffs of Baia delle Zagare on the Gargano (Puglia), and the crystal-clear waters of Marina dell’Isola in Tropea (Calabria), watched over from above by its picturesque sanctuary.
