The new bus shelter model, called “Eterna,” is an innovative technological structure designed to improve the user experience at Roman public transport stops. Unveiled by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, this bus shelter features a modern, lightweight design with transparent surfaces that offer protection from the elements and turn waiting into an active moment.
Among the features offered are USB sockets for charging and a touchscreen that provides several innovative services. In addition, the canopy is equipped with an anonymized monitoring system to analyze the flow of people and is accessible to all thanks to the Navilens system, which supports people with visual impairments.
Users can:
- consult vehicle schedules;
- receive real-time mobility information;
- find out news about cultural sites and local events in Italian and English;
- plan their own trips;
- communicate with Atac in real time.
This project is part of Atac’s “Smart Stops Plan,” which includes the installation of 435 new bus shelters and 405 digital bollards in all of Rome’s municipalities. The plan also includes the upgrading of 1,400 existing bus shelters and 8,200 bollards, for a total of more than 9,600 renovated installations. The old bus shelters will not be disposed of but reconditioned for use where needed.
Installations will begin in November and continue until completion expected by the first half of 2025. Mayor Gualtieri thanked General Manager Zorzan and Atac staff for their commitment to this important renovation project.
Mobility Councillor Eugenio Patanè stressed that the new bus shelters will improve accessibility to public transportation and provide greater transparency. In addition, the removed traditional bus shelters will be reused, where possible, at stops currently without them.
