If you’re looking for a city escape that combines nature, adventure, and a touch of history, there’s a place just over an hour from Rome that will leave you speechless: the Falvaterra Caves. We’re in the heart of southern Lazio, in the province of Frosinone, where time seems to have stood still to carve a masterpiece of rock and water.
Why you should visit the caves and discover the magic of the heart-shaped lake
Forget the usual walks: here you literally step “inside” the earth, following the rhythm of the Rio Obaco. It’s a perfect getaway to unwind, ideal for those seeking relaxation as well as those looking for a bit of adrenaline. A trip accessible to everyone (barrier-free). Thanks to minimal slopes and the total absence of steps, the route is fully accessible even to people with disabilities.

You’ll be able to admire the underground river’s perpetual flow up close, letting yourself be enchanted by the sound of the rapids and waterfalls that bring the active part of the cave to life. Looking up toward the “fossil” section, you’ll find yourself surrounded by incredible natural sculptures: white calcium carbonate concretions forming stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and curious formations called “spaghetti” or “jellyfish.”
What not to miss

- Rio Obaco: the stream that flows through the caves, creating a unique soundscape
- Underwater Speleology Museum: new for 2025, this is a high-tech space (Immersive Caves project) that reveals the secrets of underwater exploration through multimedia installations and educational exhibits
