The Ciclomare is a major cycling project for Rome that aims to connect the city’s historic center, starting from the Colosseum, to the archaeological excavations of Ostia Antica. This route, designed for bicycle and sustainable tourism lovers, represents a different opportunity to explore the capital’s historical and natural heritage on two wheels.
According to the project, the route will pass through several areas of historical, cultural and scenic interest, allowing cyclists to have an immersive experience between the city and the Roman coastline. The duration will be about 2 hours for experienced cyclists or slower for those who wish to enjoy the intermediate stages.
The three main objectives are to promote sustainable mobility, enhance the connections between the center of Rome and its coastal archaeological heritage, and offer an ecological and tourist alternative for citizens and visitors.
The route will start from the Colosseum, passing through Circus Maximus, Pyramid Cestia, and Via Ostiense, until it reaches the sea and the nature reserve of the Roman coast.
When will the Ciclomare be completed?
The project is under development, with the goal of completing the work within a few years (in Roma Today we read that the work is to be completed by 2028).
Its construction is part of a larger plan to build bike lanes in Rome, which includes the construction of 140 km of new bike paths in the current year. The Lazio Region has allocated 38 million euros to enhance sustainable mobility through cycling projects as part of the “A Resilient and Greener Europe” plan. Of these funds, 18 million will be earmarked for the construction of the Ciclomare bike path.
