December 2025 will give us an astronomical event of exceptional intensity: the Cold Supermoon, representing the last full moon of the year and the concluding phase of this season’s trilogy of Supermoons.
This phenomenon will be particularly memorable because of a very rare celestial configuration, which will amplify the brightness and size of the lunar disk.
Supermoon and Perigee: save the date
This is a Supermoon because the full phase coincides almost exactly with perigee (the point of minimum distance from Earth), making it appear larger and brighter than normal.
The event is made unique by a very rare cyclical alignment, known as lunar standstill, which causes the Moon to reach the maximum possible height in the sky for the Northern Hemisphere. A combination of maximum proximity and maximum height that will not occur again until 2042.
When and How to Admire It
The exact time of the perfect full moon will be the night of Dec. 4-5, precisely 00:14 Italian time on Dec. 5. However, the most striking visual effect will occur on the evening of December 4, just after sunset. At that time, the Moon will rise over the eastern horizon. So if you do not want to miss this spectacle, we recommend going to a place with a wide view, away from artificial light.
It will appear larger and with a reddish tint due to the Earth’s atmosphere acting as a magnifying glass and filter.
This unusual alignment makes this year’s Super Cold Moon one of the most evocative and intense of the entire decade, a must-see for sky enthusiasts.
How to photograph the moon
How many of you have at least once tried to photograph the Moon without getting a good result? Yes, it is not easy without proper equipment. In order to make sure that the Moon is not reduced to just a blurred bright spot, you should use a tripod and self-timer. As for the zoom lens, better use the optical one or a telescope adapter. Also, use an app that allows you to adjust focus and exposure time. Some smartphones also have a moon mode.
