Are you ready to experience one of the most anticipated moments of the year? If you live in Rome and love the holiday atmosphere, there’s a specific date and time that you should definitely circle in red on your calendar (or save in your phone notes right away).
Christmas in the heart of Christendom and the Capital officially begins on Monday, December 15, at 5 p.m.
This is the exact moment when St. Peter’s Square will change its face.
Don’t make plans for that afternoon, because witnessing the lighting of the tree and the unveiling of the nativity scene live is an experience that must be had at least once, especially if you’re looking for that unique mix of spirituality and artistic beauty that only Rome can provide.
Want to know what you can expect and why it’s worth braving a bit of cold weather to be there?
Here are all the details.
Monday, Dec. 15, 2025: St. Peter’s Square lights up

Following the lighting of the trees in Piazza del Popolo and Piazza del Campidoglio in the past few days, next Monday, as the sun begins to set over Rome, the official Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Vatican will start at 5 p.m. sharp.
Presiding over the event will be the authorities of the Vatican Governorate (Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga and Sister Raffaella Petrini), but the real stars will be them: the lights.
In a moment, you will see two masterpieces that unite Italy from North to South light up:
- The majestic spruce tree that arrived from the mountains of Bolzano.
- The spectacular Nativity from the province of Salerno.
Don’t worry if you can’t get through just Monday: the installations will remain there, towering and glowing, throughout the holidays.
You will be able to admire them until Sunday, January 11, 2026, the day when Christmas time closes with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
But admit it: seeing them light up for the first time has a whole other flavor.
Some fun facts about the event (to arrive prepared)
Before the big event at 5 p.m., the day at the Vatican will already be hectic. In the morning, in fact, Pope Leo XIV (sources confirm an audience with the Pontiff) will receive the delegations that made this show possible.
It is a symbolic meeting that unites the Alpine traditions of Bolzano-Bressanone with the warm, Mediterranean traditions of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno.
But there is one detail you may not know and you can tell your friends while you wait for the lighting: there is also a piece of Costa Rica in the Paul VI Hall. It is the “Nacimiento Gaudium” nativity scene, a very touching work decorated with thousands of colored ribbons, each representing a life saved.
A curiosity in the curiosity: the statue of Our Lady will change her appearance! During Advent you will see her pregnant, while on Christmas night she will be replaced with the Virgin adoring the Child.
St. Peter’s Tree: a good and sustainable giant

When you look up on Monday at 5 p.m., you will find yourself in front of a 25-meter-tall green behemoth. This spruce tree comes from Val d’Ultimo (Bolzano) and is a gift from the municipalities of Lagundo and Ultimo.
It did not arrive alone: keeping it company are 40 other smaller saplings scattered around the Vatican.
But the thing you’ll like best, if you’re environmentally conscious, is the fate of this tree. No waste, just smart recycling.
In fact, do you know what will happen after the holidays?
The green branches will not be thrown away, but turned into natural essential oils (thanks to a specialized Austrian company).
The wood from the trunk will get a second life: it will be donated to a charity to be processed and reused.
This year’s St. Peter’s tree not only decorates, but sends a powerful message of respect for nature.
The Nativity scene: a corner of Campania in the center of the world
As the tree soars upward, the nativity scene will ask you to look down and lose yourself in the details. The work to be unveiled Monday comes from the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno and is a tribute to Southern tradition.
Don’t expect the classic stylized hut. Here we’re talking about a huge set(17×12 meters) inspired by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, the saint who wrote “Thou Descend from the Stars.”
Here’s what you’ll notice:
- Life-size figures: you’ll feel like you’re walking among shepherds.
- Real architecture: you’ll recognize typical elements of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese and ancient Roman pavements.
- Local symbols: look hard and you’ll find references to the food and wine excellence of that land.
