The capital never ceases to amaze those who know where to look. Through the end of September, the gates to a usually inaccessible green oasis open to the public, revealing a hidden treasure right behind one of Rome’s most beloved monuments.
A Secret Oasis on the Janiculum: An Exclusive Look Behind the “Fontanone”
Before exploring the garden, it’s impossible not to stop and admire the majestic Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, affectionately known to Romans as “Il Fontanone.” Commissioned by Pope Paul V (of the Borghese family) and completed in 1612 to celebrate the restoration of the ancient Trajan Aqueduct, the fountain was largely constructed using marble taken from the Roman Forum. Its imposing arches, surmounted by the eagles and dragons of the papal coat of arms, dominate the city. Today it is an absolute icon, made even more famous internationally for serving as the backdrop to the memorable opening scene of the Oscar-winning film *The Great Beauty*.
The Attraction to Discover

Right behind this monumental masterpiece, by climbing a small flight of stairs on Via Garibaldi, you enter what has been an ancient botanical garden since 1660. Strolling through this intimate space, you can admire historical artifacts such as columns, stone sculptures, a sarcophagus, and a charming 17th-century nymphaeum fountain. But the true magic of the place lies in its location: it offers a completely unique perspective and a genuine “behind-the-scenes” view of the fountain, providing an enchanting glimpse off the beaten path.
The peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by a book-crossing station. Visitors are invited to participate in this cultural exchange by leaving a book of their own to take another, or they can simply sit down and flip through a few pages while enjoying the tranquility and the breathtaking view.
