Have you ever walked through Trastevere and had the feeling that, behind those heavy doors, a parallel world is hiding? If you walk all the way down Via della Lungara, just where the echo of mass tourism begins to fade, you come across Via della Penitenza. At number 35, there is a place that defies the laws of Roman chaos: it is called Zalib.
It is not just a place and it is not the usual bookstore. It is a cultural oasis run by an under-35, female-dominated board, a creative hub that smells of paper, coffee and dreams fulfilled, where peace reigns supreme even on the busiest Saturday night.
Zalib: the secret garden in Trastevere where time stands still
To cross the threshold of Zalib is to enter a unique ecosystem. It is a space where you canstudy in the morning in astudy room with free wifi, do coworking in the afternoon and, when the sun goes down, find yourself in an enchanted garden to attend a film screening under the stars.
This space, set in the enchanting setting of Via della Lungara, is a Circolo Arci. That means it is not the classic “tourist-catcher” place: you come here for the substance. There are:
- A dedicated food & drink area with honest prices (very rare in the area).
- Two indoor gardens where you can relax among books.
- A small outdoor cinema and an indoor screening room.
- A young, empathetic staff ready to make you feel at home.
It’s the ideal place if you’re looking for an alternative to the noisy nightlife, a place to “get away from it all” and breathe in real culture, without pretensions to fashion.
Cinema, books, jazz and stand-up comedy: why you won’t want to leave
If you’re wondering what to do in Rome tonight, a good idea might be to check out Zalib’s schedule. From 2020 to the present, this center has hosted nearly 600 events, making it a reference point for those looking for intelligent stimulation.
What to expect?
- Editorial Presentations: intimate meetings with emerging authors and big names.
- Cinema and Documentaries: screenings often followed by thought-provoking discussions.
- Music and Theater: acoustic performances, art exhibitions and stand-up comedy shows that break the mold.
- Social and Solidarity Events: initiatives organized with universities and area associations.
To not miss a single event, the trick is to follow them on social or drop by: the atmosphere is so inclusive that you’ll find yourself chatting with strangers over a beer or a book, feeling part of a vibrant community.
The incredible story of the “Boys from Via della Gatta”: how Zalib was born

The story of Zalib is one of those beautiful fairy tales that are true, however. It all began in 2017 on Via della Gatta, where Marco Zavaroni’s historic bookstore was in danger of disappearing forever. In an age of e-commerce and stellar rentals, it seemed like a losing battle.
But that’s where the miracle happens: the kids who used to frequent the bookstore unite in the #SaveZalib movement.
They launch a worldwide crowdfunding and raise 20,000 euros in a month, attracting the attention of press and institutions. The original location closes anyway, but thanks to the tenacity of its supporters, Zalib finds new life on Via della Penitenza.
Here, today, it is a reality that employs 5 permanent employees and boasts more than 20 volunteers, proving that culture can be a real opportunity for young Romans.
