December has arrived almost without realizing it, hasn’t it? It seems like yesterday that we were in short sleeves enjoying the Roman ottobrata, and suddenly here we are: scarf, coat and that irrepressible craving for hot chocolate.
December is a special month because the Eternal City changes its face. It’s not just a matter of things to do in Rome in winter; it’s the atmosphere in the alleys. The warm sampietrini lights reflecting off the illuminations, the smell of roasted chestnuts on every corner, and that cheerful frenzy that precedes the holidays.
Whether you are a DOC Roman, a nostalgic out-of-towner or a tourist who has chosen the capital for the vacations, the city offers an incredible range of options. We’re not just talking about the classic markets (which we also love), but immersive experiences, virtual reality, food festivals and candlelight concerts.
Ready to take notes? Here’s our curated selection of the top 10 experiences to experience Rome in December like you’ve never seen it before.
A Candlelight Concert
Let’s start with a touch of class and atmosphere. If you’re looking for an experience that combines romance and music, both classical and pop, Candlelight concerts are the perfect answer to city chaos. Imagine listening to classical music (and more) surrounded by thousands of candles.
Candlelight concerts transform the Salone Bernini at Palazzo Ripetta into a daydream. The highlight is “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons” (Dec. 5), but the December 2025 program is packed: from tributes to Hans Zimmer (Dec. 7) and Coldplay (Dec. 14) to Lucio Dalla (Dec. 28).
Get ready to get excited.
Inauguration of Christmas tree and nativity scene at St. Peter’s

Among the Christmas events in Rome, this is the “highlight” moment for those who love tradition. Mark your calendar: Saturday, December 7, 6:30 pm. The atmosphere in St. Peter’s Square becomes electric.
Witness the official lighting of Christmas at the Vatican. This year’s nativity scene is a work of art from Grado, set in an early 20th century lagoon with real water and boats! Towering above it all is a 29-meter spruce from the sustainable woods of Ledro. It is a free, spiritual and visually powerful event. In the morning you can also visit the “Nativity of Bethlehem” in Paul VI Hall. Cover yourself well and enjoy the show!
Guided tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

December is the month of spirituality, and there is no place more iconic than the Vatican. However, no one wants to spend the vacation season standing in line in the cold. That’s why an organized skip-the-line tour is one of the best things to do in Rome in winter.
Give yourself a “time-saving” tour that includes the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica with a single ticket. Avoid the mile-long lines and enjoy Michelangelo’s Pieta and the Sistine frescoes with a knowledgeable guide. In December, keep an eye out for special Nativity-themed tours on Saturdays and free access to St. Peter’s Square for the tree. A timeless classic that, done without stress, becomes a new experience.
Rome’s tallest Ferris wheel
EUR is preparing to become the beating heart of Christmas fun. If you want to see Rome in December from a different perspective (literally), you need to head to Oceania Avenue.
Here comes the Roma Eye, the tallest Ferris wheel ever seen in the Capital: a whopping 50 meters high! Open from December 8 until Befana 2026, it offers a spectacular view. But that’s not all: on December 13, the wheel becomes a disco with DJ sets! All around, a Christmas village with street food and markets at the EUR Pond and Santa’s house (from November 29). A perfect mix of adrenaline and holiday spirit.
Titanic – A journey through time
Have you ever dreamed of walking on the most famous ship in history? Among the things to do in Rome in December, this is perhaps the most technological and exciting. You don’t need a life jacket, just a VR visor!
A breathtaking virtual reality experience developed with Musealia awaits you at Forte Trionfale. “Titanic – A Journey Through Time” teleports you first to the wreck at a depth of 3.8 km, and then back to 1912. You’ll walk the Grand Staircase, explore the dining rooms, and experience the stories of the passengers. This is a unique immersive adventure to truly understand the tragedy and majesty of the Titanic, perfect for those looking for interesting things to do in Rome beyond the classic Christmas activities.
Chaos Lab Rome
Parents, uncles and cousins beware: if you have to entertain little brats and are looking for kid-friendly events in Rome in December 2025, this is your “lifesaver.” Be prepared, though: hands get dirty!
Located at 74 Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano, Chaos Lab is a haven for messy creativity. The rules here are simple: create, learn and get a little dirty. Between fun physics workshops, ball pools and meeting a mad scientist, kids will go crazy with joy. Interactive totems help parents guide little ones through the installations. A brilliant way to spend a winter afternoon indoors, having fun together.
Pan de Toni – Artisan Panettone Festival.
Let’s face it: December without panettone is like Rome without the Colosseum. If you have a sweet tooth, Circolo degli Illuminati has the event for you.
On Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to midnight, “Pan de Toni” takes the stage. A festival celebrating the king of Christmas sweets with as many as 40 handcrafted variations from the best pastry shops in Italy. Not only tastings: there will be wines, beers, music and shows. Admission is free (just sign up online), making it a must-attend event to stock up on happy calories and gourmet gifts. Diet? Talk about it in January.
Metropolitan Archipelago: 4 Christmas Festivals.
Tired of unbridled consumerism? Looking for something more authentic and communal?“Arcipelago Metropolitano” is the perfect answer for those looking for events in Rome in December that have a social and sustainable soul.
Until Dec. 28, between Palazzo Rospigliosi in Zagarolo and Fusolab 3.0 in the Alessandrino area, a free, widespread festival is staged. Four thematic “islands” offer everything from gaming and VR in Zagarolo to handmade markets and children’s workshops at Fusolab. There is also the “Accessible Gift Fair” (max 50€) and a multicultural finale with foods from around the world. A splendid way to rediscover the value of being together.
ABRACADABRA The Night of Miracles.

If you want to become a child again for an evening, or if you want to leave your children speechless, Teatro Ghione hosts one of the most magical (literally!) shows of the year.
From Dec. 26 to Jan. 11,“Abracadabra” brings the world’s best illusionists to Rome. Champions such as Russia’s Artem Shchukin or Italy’s Maxim will compete in spells, fusing circus, theater and magic. It is an international show that also supports charity. Special guest on selected dates: Antonio Casanova of Striscia la Notizia! An experience that will make you doubt your own eyes and believe, for a moment, in the impossible.
Luminaria Festival – Rome Light Experience

We close our list with an event that makes the city shine. Luminarias are not just decorations, but true works of contemporary art. If you’re wondering what to do in Rome in December at night, the answer is: walk around with your nose in the air.
Until January 6, 2026, the “Luminarie Festival” transforms the center (Imperial Forum, Navona, Trastevere) into the “City of Wonders.” International artists have created breathtaking low-energy installations. Don’t miss the 12-meter arch at the Colosseum that plays original music and the floating sculptures on the Tiber. There are also night tours and workshops at the Chiostro del Bramante. An open-air museum, totally free and super “Instagrammable.”
