After weeks of unusually mild weather in Rome, a frosty wave is poised to upset every forecast. In just a few hours, what looked like a warm autumn will give way to chilly nights and chilling minimum temperatures.
In fact, between Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4, Lazio will experience an unusual drop in temperature, with values dropping as low as 6-7 °C and strong winds ready to exacerbate the chilly feeling.
In Latium, an “unseasonable” thermal drop that displaces the models
An autumn that arrives with a bang. After a September characterized by above-average temperatures and stable weather, the entry of autumn will not be gradual, but decisive. The arrival of cold air will cause temperature values to plummet by more than 8-10 °C from previous days.
Highs could drop from 22-24 °C to 14-16 °C in a few hours. Nights will become freezing: lows of 6-7 °C in many inland areas, 8 °C recorded in Viterbo, and even lower values in the provinces of Frosinone and Latina.
The unusual “leap to winter” for the beginning of October in Rome.
We talk about cold weather surprising Lazio because this is not a common climatic event for the beginning of October. Usually, temperatures drop slowly and frosts are limited to the end of the month or November. Here we are talking about an episode reminiscent of late-season weather jolts or mountainous regions where cold weather anticipates winter.
In more northern regions, we see these thermal precipitations between late October and November; in Latium, they are unusual at this point in the year.
Critical cold days: weather forecast for Latium in October 2025

The cold wave that will affect Lazio in the coming days will not be constant. Here’s what to expect:
Friday, Oct. 3: Frosty lows and below-seasonal average highs.
Minimum temperatures in the morning are expected to drop towards 6-7 °C in inland areas. Highs will struggle to exceed 16-18 °C in many areas of Lazio.
Saturday, Oct. 4: coldest day with intense winds and frost
This will be the coldest day: lows could approach 6 °C or even drop slightly below in particularly cold or isolated locations. Highs could be around 15 °C. A slight improvement is expected from the afternoon, but the cold will remain intense.
Sunday, Oct. 5: Slow improvement but still cold nights
The milder flow should slowly ease the onslaught of cold in Lazio cities. Temperatures will rise again, but nights will remain below seasonal averages, especially in inland places and valleys.
But why will it be so cold in Lazio this weekend?
The drop in temperatures over the next few days is due to a cold irruption from the northeastern quadrants that will make its way toward the central Mediterranean. The frigid air will penetrate the Italian basins and even lap Rome and its environs, causing temperatures to drop sharply.
In previous days, the ground and atmosphere were more “warmed” by the mild weather: when sudden cold arrives, thermal inertia accentuates the shock, making the drop more abrupt. Northeastern currents (grecale, tramontana) promote the drainage of warm air, accelerating the cooling.
The weather forecast leaves no room for doubt about the cold weather coming to our Region. So get ready now: clothes, home and travel will have to adapt to this sudden seasonal leap.
