One of Lazio’s most precious jewels, Ronciglione, confirms its status as an unmissable destination on the national tourist scene. The recognition of Borgo dei Borghi a few years ago confirmed the beauty of this place, which is home to just over 8,000 inhabitants and has enchanted the whole of Italy. The announcement of its beauty, also celebrated on Rai 3, saw it triumph in a very close competition with 19 other villages of excellence, beating finalists such as Sant’Antìoco and Salemi.
What to see in Ronciglione: a one-day itinerary
In addition to being the birthplace of Marco Mengoni, an artist who was also honored during Sanremo week with illuminations based on his songs, it is a destination where history, traditions, and nature come together a short distance from the capital.
Perched on a tuff spur, the village offers a unique visual experience thanks to its vertical architecture.
Let’s see what to see in one day: we will spend the morning immersing ourselves in the medieval village; the historic heart of Ronciglione is perfect for exploring on foot. Park your car near Viale Garibaldi or near Porta Romana to start the tour.
Porta Romana was built in 1618 at the behest of Duke Odoardo Farnese and clearly divides the ancient soul of the village from its more modern part.

Continuing towards the old town, stop at a small church perched on a hill (Chiesa di Santa Maria della Provvidenza). It is famous for its frescoes and its panoramic position, which offers a unique view of the houses built on tuff.
Head to Piazza Principe di Napoli to admire the monumental stone fountain (fontana degli unicorni), a symbol of elegance and local history.
A few steps from the fountain, visit the majestic Baroque cathedral. Its façade dominates the square and the interior houses works of art of great importance.
End your walk through the village by admiring the four massive towers of the Rovere castle. Although it is often only open to the public for private events, its structure is a symbol of Ronciglione’s historical power.
For lunch, try Ronciglione’s signature dish: tortorelli, a simple pasta made from water and flour served with a characteristic sauce made from dried fennel flowers.
Nature and Leisure: the oasis of Lake Vico

Located a few kilometers from the center, Lake Vico holds the record for altitude among the large Italian lakes. Nestled in the Monti Cimini nature reserve, it is the ideal place for refreshing walks under centuries-old trees, family days out thanks to playgrounds and comprehensive services (bars, kiosks, and restaurants), and relaxation with your pets in dedicated areas.
