Want to work or study outdoors? The “Roma 5G” project marks an important step forward with the activation of free public Wi-Fi and video surveillance cameras in several squares in Rome. The goal is to transform Rome into a state-of-the-art smart city, improving the use of the city and its services for citizens and tourists.
The project in numbers

To date, 26 piazzas have active Wi-Fi with 5G cameras, 22 piazzas are wired and awaiting activation by October 2025, and 7 piazzas are still under construction. Overall, 230 cameras, 280 Wi-Fi access points and more than 10 km of fiber optics have been installed. The connection offers speeds of up to 300 Mbps with simplified access through e-mail and the possibility of continuous connection in enabled squares for 14 days.
There are also about 1,800 IoT sensors in the covered areas for environmental and air quality monitoring. Metro line A is covered by more than 85 km of fiber and 1,500 mini-antennas, while work is underway on lines B1 and B, with line C in the planning stage. The network is operated from an advanced radio equipment room in the Piazza Vittorio station, among the largest in Europe.
