This morning, Friday, July 4, 2025, around 8:15 a. m., a loud explosion shook Rome’s Prenestino neighborhood, specifically in Via dei Gordiani, in the Villa De Santis area. The incident was caused by the detachment of a pump connected to a tanker feeding a gas station, causing a fire and a roar so powerful that it was felt in numerous neighborhoods of the city, with the shock wave rattling the windows of homes even from a distance.
Residents described the roar as similar to a bomb, with shaking glass and pieces of iron hurled into the air. The incident has created alarm throughout the city, and authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage and the condition of the injured. Ambulance sirens can be heard from homes.
The damage caused
From the first information, a thick column of black smoke rose, visible from much of the city, and the flames also reached a judicial warehouse near the gas station. Firefighters, law enforcement and civil defense immediately responded to the scene and activated all emergency procedures to contain the blaze and secure the area.
The explosion caused damage to nearby buildings and injured at least 10 people among rescue and medical workers, including a firefighter, some police officers and an EMS worker. Several bystanders were reportedly injured. According to initial reports, firefighters had already responded to a truck that had hit a pipeline when the deflagration occurred.
The situation is being updated and authorities continue extinguishing and securing the area; Via dei Gordiani and the Teano Metro C station have been closed.
