Starting from January 2025, the price of metro, bus and streetcar tickets in Rome will increase from 1.50 euros to 2 euros. Lazio Governor Francesco Rocca, as reported in Roma Today, is considering a modulation of the price based on users’ income, with a greater burden on tourists. Rocca stresses that the resource problem is real and proposes charging tourists more and introducing tiered rates based on Isee for local users to avoid penalizing low-income families.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri called the increase a “painful necessity” because of the insufficient government subsidy to local public transport and rising costs. Without the fare increase, service could be reduced, with negative consequences. Gualtieri also pointed out that tickets in Rome are among the cheapest compared to other major European cities and he intends to keep the annual season ticket at a competitive price.
Fares were supposed to increase as early as last July, but then everything was postponed to find solutions to the problem.
