Lovers of French treats and Japanese cuisine, you may not know that as of June 2024 there is a place in town where you can find French and Japanese flavors at the table. Koû Koû, located at 41 Via Monte Pertica in Rome, is a unique eatery that combines the culinary tradition of Japan with the elegance of the pastry of France. Opened in June 2024, it is run by Paola Mazzeo, a Roman pastry chef with experience in Japan and France, and her partner Wataru Izumo, a chef specializing in traditional Italian and Japanese(washoku) cuisine.
Washoku Cuisine
Koû Koû’s culinary offerings focus on authentic Japanese cuisine, far from “all you can eat” sushi (so if you are looking for this type of meal, this is not the place for you). Main dishes include tonkatsu ( Japanese cutlet), karaage ( fried chicken),oyakodon (rice bowl with chicken and egg), and seasonal dishes such as sukiyaki or shabu shabu.
In short, a trip to Japan without having to take a plane.
French pastries
The pastries are inspired by French tradition but enriched with oriental flavors. Creations include refined monoportions, cream puffs, Paris-Brests, and pastries flavored with Japanese ingredients such as black sesame, yuzu, and matcha tea. Imported teas and herbal teas can also be enjoyed.
