New York and Rome united by a shared love of opera: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted a video on his social media channels promoting the partnership between the Big Apple and the Metropolitan Opera House, offering 70,000 free tickets to upcoming performances, ranging from *La Bohème* to *Macbeth*.
The capital will do the same, with a project that plans to open the shows on the program at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma to the public free of charge.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri also appears alongside Mamdani, delivering a series of jokes and references to the world of opera and ancient Rome, including “veni, vidi, free-ci,” a play on Julius Caesar’s famous phrase “veni, vidi, vici.”
At the beginning of the video, the mayor of New York sings the opening lines of “Bella Ciao,” only to be interrupted by Gualtieri, who suggests he leave the singing to those who do it for a living.
Free tickets to the Rome Opera House

The two mayors have come together to present a joint project: in Rome, too, 10,000 free tickets will be made available for performances on the program at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, starting January 1, 2027, with details to be announced shortly by the City of Rome.
