In a few years, the Coliseum could return to being the maxi pop stage trodden by the iconic Lizzie McGuire in 2003. This was announced by Simone Quilici, newly appointed director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, who would like to bring the amphitheater back into the Italian and international music spotlight. Think listening to music legends like Sting and Paul McCartney inside one of the world’s most visited monuments… This is what dreams are made of!

Everything you need to know about the new life of the Colosseum
This year at the level of musical novelties and record-breaking concerts, the Lazio region seems unsurpassed. After the Vatican held Grace for The World, the maxi show that attracted thousands of people from all over Italy and beyond, the capital is preparing to reopen the doors of the world’s most famous amphitheater, not only for guided tours, but for unforgettable concerts. The idea would be to give back to the people what belongs to the people and thus, allow citizens to experience the magic of the Colosseum through music as well.
Where to start? One of the first steps will undoubtedly be the expansion of the arena. Indeed, the stage will have to be rethought to host large-scale events, replacing the current structure with innovative materials, such as carbon fiber panels, which can guarantee solidity and lightness.
In parallel, the project aims to redesign the access system to the amphitheater, improving the Colosseum’s connections with the surrounding areas. The goal is to integrate the routes to the Roman Forum and Palatine, creating a unified archaeological itinerary that restores continuity and harmony between the symbolic sites of ancient Rome.

Costs, preservation and other questions
It is undoubtedly an ambitious project that brings with it enthusiasm but also numerous questions. How will it be possible to reconcile the enhancement of the Colosseum with the need to protect such a precious and ancient monument? The idea of bringing the amphitheater back to life, transforming it into a space capable of once again astonishing citizens and tourists, fascinates and divides at the same time.
Also to be considered is the node of the cost of the interventions, the figure of which has not been revealed but is expected to reach a considerable sum, compatible with the scale and complexity of the project. The economic sustainability of the project is just another question to be answered by the new director. In the meantime, we just dream with the idea of a pop and rock Coliseum.
