A tour of Tivoli
It is a city with a rich history, many say it is even older than Rome, and is world famous for its villas and waters. Tivoli is a true jewel of history and architecture, the only Italian city (along with Padua) to have two UNESCO sites:
- ⛲ Villa d’Este (UNESCO World Heritage Site): A masterpiece of the Renaissance, world-famous for its magnificent Italian gardens and, above all, for its impressive complex of a hundred fountains, water features and nymphaea.
- 🕌 Hadrian’s Villa (UNESCO World Heritage Site): The largest and most spectacular residence ever built by a Roman emperor, commissioned by Hadrian in the second century A.D. It is a true imperial “city,” designed to replicate the places seen by the emperor on his travels (such as the famous Canopus).
- 🌳 Villa Gregoriana (FAI asset): A wildly romantic natural park, created after a flood of the Aniene River in the 19th century. The highlight is the Grande Cascata, a spectacular man-made waterfall, and paths leading to evocative caves.
If you go to the chocolate festival, you can’t miss visiting one of the beautiful villas.
