In December, Europe’s largest gasometer illuminates Rome with art, light, and magic

As the days grow shorter, Rome prepares to see one of its industrial landmarks in a new light. From December 4, 2026, to January 9, 2027, the Ostiense Gasometer will host ART IS LIGHT, a project that blends contemporary art and immersive technologies, transforming its spaces into a luminous landscape to explore. The exhibition will also open with the return of Luxometro, the artwork that first illuminated the Gasometer twenty years ago.

And the opportunities to experience Rome through lights and music don’t end there: in December, the Candlelight concerts will bring Christmas soundtracks and classics to the Salone Bernini at Palazzo Ripetta.

The Gazometro comes alive with light installations and immersive artworks

The project unfolds across three itineraries:

• Art is Gallery transforms the post-industrial spaces of the Gazometro G3 into a multimedia gallery, featuring works of New Media Art, light art, and video installations.
• Art is Over Size, on the other hand, brings monumental installations to industrial architecture: at the center is Luxometro, which returns with a new interpretation right where it was first created in 2006.
• Finally, with Art is Playable, the artworks become spaces to explore and experience firsthand.

Among the announced installations are an ice and light rink, a kinetic vortex, and suspended structures that visitors can walk through. The experience spans the 80,000 square meters of the Gazometro District and creates a dialogue between art, technology, and industrial archaeology.

Candlelight Concerts in Rome

In December, the light of the installations may give way to that of candles. At the Salone Bernini in Palazzo Ripetta, “Candlelight: Ennio Morricone and Other Soundtracks” is scheduled for December 4 and 12.
