Sagra della Rola and the feast of the cuckold
An unusual festival held each year in a village in Latium, a short distance from Rome. Famous for its filoni and loaves of bread, the bread town also celebrates the “Festa del Cornuto,” a goliardic celebration held every November during the Sagra della Rola. During this festival, men wear funny horns and recite playful rhymes and poems about their plight as “betrayed husbands.”
During the festivities, expected to take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10 from 12 p.m., the burlesque parade will take place and there will be food stands where you can eat roasted chestnuts (role), beans with pork rinds, sausage and chicory sandwiches, cecamariti (the typical pasta) and much more.
What to see in Rocca Canterano
Rocca Canterano is a charming village, about 750 meters above sea level in the Ruffi Mountains, a mountain range in the Latium sub-Apennines, overlooking the picturesque Aniene Valley.
The Latium village has ancient origins, dating back to the time of the Equi, an ancient Italic people. Over the centuries, it became a resort for Roman patrician families in the 2nd century AD, who built villas whose remains are still visible today. During the Middle Ages, Rocca Canterano served as a military fortress.
Monuments of historical and artistic interest include the Moretti Palace, built between 1756 and 1759, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the 17th century and restored after the 2000 earthquake.
The village also offers wonderful opportunities for nature lovers. The Merro Meadow is a wide green plain equipped with picnic areas, ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the surrounding nature. In addition, there are various hiking trails that allow you to explore the natural beauty in the surrounding area.
